Hugo Boss Red

Hugo Boss Red Fragrance for men bottle

Guess which brand is launching a very interesting fragrance -and bottle but we’ll get to that in a bit- sooner than you think. Hugo by Hugo Boss is the first fragrance I ever bought abroad, yay for alcohol being cheaper abroad, but also the second ever in my collection. A very heavy fragrance for a young me and not very loved at the time, it took time for me to mellow a bit in the scent. More than a decade later my personal preference in scents has changed a lot, so this new launch by Hugo was perceived as interesting on paper.

The bottle is the same flask type that carries certain memories for me, but in an updated red edition with black screw on cap. The fun thing about this launch is that it’s a constant contradiction between hot & cold. The scent has notes of warm amber & cedarwood, but at the same time it’s got grapefruit in the top notes and rhubarb in the heart. What did I tell you about it being very strange  on paper? This is going to be a huge hit with people that appreciate a certain type of scent. I love warm scents but in the summer it’s all about the freshness and ability to be crisp then. Mmm this one starts off very fresh with the citrus note but then as it evolves over a couple of hours, it goes to a warmer climate with the basenotes of cedarwood & amber.

Very hard to explain but for hours on end -this lasted all day on me as if I just sprayed some- this will give you an initial fresh/clean hit of citrus and then get all warm/cosy on you. It’s like having two different perfumes on at once, one warm and one cold. Longevity is a huge plus, it lasted for two days on end easily and still smelled strong, so go easy with bathing in this ok?

The bottle itself is red but also heat sensitive. During the presentation the PR lady offered me to hold the bottle while she explained the whole concept -Jared Leto staring at me from a huge poster behind her- and I laughed at the surprise factor. Where you touch the bottle with warm fingers, it’ll turn the bottle into a lighter shade of red. I tried to capture this on camera, but since I’m so very slow in putting everything back into perfect position, the effect faded faster than my camera could capture it. Trust me, it works and I still laugh whenever it happens. Guys will understand this as a novelty factor, the ladies don’t understand it all that much apparently.

I doubt I have to explain how sturdy the glass bottle is and this cap is not going anywhere. When you start seeing the window displays turn red with Jared Leto, or he’s looking at you all seductivly from the tv screen, remember that the scent that goes with it is really appealing.

Now to find a new hiding spot for this before my brother catches wind of this being withing grabbing range.

I’m not a lover of Hugo scents but this one sounds so good and I need to try it. I have so many fragrances but I love the look of the bottle and the Rhubarb note catches me. Is there a fragrance similar in scent?

Hmm no I haven’t found anything similar to this ever. It starts out with that citrus fresh feeling but then it gets warmer in scent. Very strange, you’d have to imagine spraying a fresh citrus and then remove, to spray a warmer rich scent. Rinse & repeat. I’d say go spray a tester at the store and let it develop on your wrist for an hour. You’ll see what I mean :)
